Death; the cessation of life. Why? No one truly knows, but among these parts, death rides upon black wings; he is dubbed Thanatos. To mortals, he is beautiful and divine, appealing and charming – but that is all mere trickery for his true purpose lies shortly after. To those who know him well, his beauty is overlooked as fearful and grotesque, benighted in the stench of death, the one true thing all mortals fear. Even the gods detest this foul deity, for he brings with him the eventual spire of life, only to point these poor souls in the direction of Hades. Ebony; his natural pigment. Black as the indiscriminate heart which rests encased within his breast. Black wings beat a deadly tune, singing sweet songs of misery as he rides upon his next target. Think of him as an angel – a fallen angel – the angel of death.
Wait… The distant, eerie wisp of a silent wing, so silent one would suddenly hear his pulse ticking away like an old clock counting down on him. Each beat of a feather draws another bead of sweat, aching in the doom which lies ahead; but wrenched in the opposite direction of the fear of not knowing what comes next. His presence arrives, stealthy and in suave fashion; pristine in all divine glory. Godly, the prince of darkness fluttered hell ward to take his place upon the hearth. Upon a graceful contact with the ground surface, once green blades of grass turned to dried up wiry tendrils; lifeless. He was proud; taught curvature displaying sheer perfection with a dainty touch, almost a feminist, but still masculine. Feathered flints neared the targeted mortal, deep purple voids peering indiscriminately upon his present receiver.
“I am Thanatos, do not be afraid…” His voice was light and airy, wispy like an angelic being, truly pleasant to hear. He still carried with him an uneasy aura, but his presence seemed so overwhelming to really take heed any natural response to such a foreboding feeling. The ebony cherub smiled with what appeared to be a sincere smile upon the mortal; charming, if at the very least. Today would be the last day this mortal breathed the fresh air of Aether(God of the Atmosphere), for Thanatos was the reaper of life – the angel of death. An over powering feeling of the urgency to sleep restlessly would soon take over the mortal’s mind, followed by his body and soul, and all the while Thanatos would hum a sweet song, entrancing his victim in the cold grasp of death; whispering a recipe of expiry into the dying one’s ear as he slowly passed for Hades’ taking. Thanatos knew all too well that most mortals never possessed the knowledge of cheating death, nor was it really an option for them (or so they believed), and thus made his job incredibly easy. This was probably the underlying reason of his ridicule from all of the gods which represented goodness and light. 496 W Notes: This is Ares, BTW. I would like Mania to personally accept/deny this form because I'm not sure if he would be allowed as another (lesser) god, or just another deity or not... Thanatos is the god of death, I thought he would be a really cool character to portray, and so far, has proved true I dunno, what do you think??

Name: Thanatos Age: Immortal Gender: male Lesser god, deity, Normal: Lesser God
Personality: Thanatos is beautiful to look upon, and therefore he uses this ability with his charm. He is very manipulative, and a liar to get what he wants done, which is usually just taking the lives of mortals and passing them over to Hades. He will usually tell a mortal they are OK, lying to them; he might sometimes call himself after his twin brother, Hypnos, god of sleep, when really he is the god of death. This is to make his targets easier to persuade into unconsciousness prior to ending their mortal existence. He reminds many of a fallen angel, or an angelic being from heaven, which, in some ways he is, for he is the angel of death. His voice carries his demeanor to a higher note as it is light and airy to hear, sweet and inviting to the untrained mortal’s ear. He expresses slight femininity, although he is portrayed as a male character. Instead of dominating his target, he will lie and manipulate it into bending to his will effortlessly. Likes: Mortals, the vulnerable, Hades, a job well done Dislikes: Lighter immortals, when mortals cheat death, when gods take the side of favoured mortals (they all need to die some day!) Fears: The day that all mortals cheat death, the day Hades becomes too over populated (if that would ever happen...) Hopes: To continue his duty, effortlessly, taking the lives of mortals. Dreams: To one day take the life of an immortal.
appearance: Thanatos is beautiful. He appears as a gorgeous, divine, Friesian stallion standing at about sixteen hands high. Deep purple voids leer out with great integrity, like hazed, violet clouds; they are entrancing for mortals to look upon – but be warned, do not stare too close, for they mock the rivers of death, revealing past souls shackled for all of eternity and damned in the rivers of Hades, drawing the onlooker in further. As for physique, Thanatos is slightly thinner than the heavier, well-muscled Friesian horse. Although he is well-muscled, he takes on a leaner appearance, giving him a slightly more feminine appeal which only adds to his charm and seemingly innocence with mortals. From his withers stretch massive, black, feathered appendages constructed for stealthy flight and maneuvering with great agility. They are said to be the first things that a mortal hears when death approaches them, each beat of his wings mocking the slowed pulse of their failing hearts. Luscious, nigrescent curls flow effortlessly from the cherub’s crest and dock, elongated and divine to look at; again this creates more look of innocence to better his chance at charm in order to get his job done with ease.
Family connections: Son of Nyx and Erebus. Twin of Hypnos. Kin to Geras(Old age), Oizys(Suffering), Moros(Doom), Apate(Deception), Momos(Blame), Eris(Strife), Nemesis(Retribution), Charon(Ferryman of Hades) History: "To Thanatos, Fumigation from Manna. Hear me, O Thanatos, whose empire unconfined extends to mortal tribes of every kind. On thee the portion of our time depends, whose absence lengthens life, whose presence ends. Thy sleep perpetual bursts the vivid bolds by which the soul attracting the body holds : common to all, of every sex and age, for nought escapes thy all-destructive rage. Not youth itself thy clemency can gain, vigorous and strong, by thee untimely slain. In thee the end of nature’s works is known, in thee all judgment is absolved alone. No suppliant arts thy dreadful rage control, no vows revoke the purpose of thy soul. O blessed power, regard my ardent prayer, and human life to age abundant spare." (Orphic Hymn 87 to Thanatos, trans. Taylor, Greek hymns C3rd B.C. to 2nd A.D.)
Thus, Thanatos is the reaper or angel of death in Greek mythology. I'm not really sure what else to say as far as his history goes other than the facts that he was born son of Nyx, Goddess of night, and Erebus, God of Darkness, and grandson to the original state of exsistence from which the first gods appeared; represented as the dark void known as outer space. He does not have so many powers as the olympian and pillar gods, for his only real power is to smite mortal bodies of their souls , and to kill anything living with an expiry date on it. He is death, and he is the last thing that every mortal sees before they die, whether he encourages it or not; he is death's sheppard who flocks the souls to the afterlife to be passed on to his partner in crime, Hades.
